How Mourning Badge Bands Are Worn

Mourning badge bands are worn as a respectful, visible symbol of remembrance. While placement may vary by department, the purpose remains the same: to honor a fallen colleague with dignity while maintaining a professional appearance. Always follow your department’s policy and guidance.

Standard Badge Placement

The most common placement for a mourning badge band is horizontally across the center of the badge. This placement is widely recognized and maintains a clean, uniform look while on duty.

How the Magnetic Attachment Works

Magnetic mourning badge bands use a two-piece system to ensure a secure and discreet fit. The band sits on the outside of the badge, while a flat magnetic backing is worn underneath the uniform shirt to hold the band firmly in place.

The internal magnet is worn under the uniform shirt and is not visible. This design allows the band to remain secure without damaging the badge, uniform, or equipment. When worn correctly, the system provides a clean, professional appearance suitable for daily duty.

Uniform Patch Placement

In some cases, departments allow mourning bands to be worn across a uniform patch rather than directly on the badge. Patch placement should be flat, centered, and must not interfere with identification or required markings.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Placement

Horizontal placement is the most common and widely accepted method. Vertical placement is less common and should only be used if explicitly permitted by department policy. When in doubt, default to horizontal placement.

When Mourning Badge Bands Are Worn

  • During official department-designated mourning periods
  • At memorial services or funeral observances
  • For line-of-duty death tributes
  • As directed by department leadership

When to Remove a Mourning Badge Band

Removal is typically based on department guidance. Common timing includes the conclusion of an official mourning period or after memorial services have ended. Officers should follow leadership direction when determining removal.

Duty and Safety Considerations

A mourning badge band should never interfere with duty performance, safety equipment, or uniform compliance. Ensure the band sits securely and does not obstruct equipment, radio straps, outer carriers, or required identification.
